From Moonshot to Earthrise
In 2018, my focus was on a moonshot. When I started 2018, I didn't know where my moonshot would take me but by the end of the year it resulted in the formation of my company, Mend the Gap. Now in 2019, I'm happily working with a number of clients, offering my consulting services, and working tirelessly to begin realizing the mission of Mend the Gap which is to close the achievement gap.
Now that I've established a successful moonshot, it's now time to define my word of focus for 2019. That word is Earthrise. In 1968, NASA took it's own moonshot and while the crew of Apollo 8 were orbiting the moon they saw something from a new perspective. As they moved around the perimeter of the moon they saw the Earth rise in much the same way that we on Earth can see the sun rise. This was a perspective that no one had ever seen before and perspective that changed the way we view and value life on our planet.
My Earthrise is going to take me and Mend the Gap on a transformation experience that will change the way we view and value education. Part of this journey is to share this perspective with other people and convince them that a new perspective is worth a shot. We need to rethink how we do education and take a more holistic and individualized approach. We need to value individual needs and difference and prioritize the needs of students who have been failed by our educational system for generations. We need to explore the intersection of student data from attendance to grades and student satisfaction to create a holistic perspective on individual student need and success.
We have the tools to make this shift, the work now is to spread the word and shift practices. I am excited to enter this new phase of my journey and look forward to helping others to see the Earthrise.
